Keep Sharing your LEARNING with us!

STUDENT SHOWCASE OF LEARNING!
Here are some things your classmates have been doing while they are off!  They shared these with me after reading our blog and trying the tasks I have given you.  A classmate created this word-search for you to do.  Thanks for being so thoughtful SC!!!  I will print this at home and give it a try this evening, the first day of Spring Break!!!

Can you see the simple machines in AO's Lego creations?

AS has figured out the area of each element of his room!  He is even doing grade 5 math, with decimals! He is learning about m and cm!

Our classmate and his SILLY FACE for the neighbourhood Window Walk and his cardboard arcade games, I wish I could play!  Someday soon!

EW's area and dream room!

GC's calculations for the quilt problem!  I wonder how many ways we could solve this!  I got the same answer but by using drawing strategy.

I have been at school all week, checking email and Google Docs.  In our SHARED FOLDER I added:

  •  a Math folder.  You can upload your images, videos to the proper folder: area dream room, quilt problem or zoo trip problem.
  • A pictures of SCIENCE folder for learning from your walks, a simple machines folder CREATING CARDBOARD GAMES, and a plants folder!
  • Random pictures folder
  • LA folder with a SPRING poem you can add to and a DIARY you can add your thinking to!  See my samples, you can read what I have been up to!
Just check our SHARED FOLDER in GOOGLE DRIVE and then choose the subject, there are other folders inside.  You can add photos, videos, Google Docs, etc.

Also, I am checking your writing on Book Creator too!  So if you have time, finish your books.  Mrs. BRice and I are going to try to find a way to share with our buddies some digital way!!  So keep working.  BUT TAKE A BREAK TOO!!!!  YOUR EYES WILL NEED A REST FROM SCREENS.  Try to remember that it is taking me a while, to take photos and reply to each of you individually, but I love it and will do my best.  Just be patient.  ::

Fun Friday!

Welcome to FRIDAY!  The last one before Spring Break!
Student Led Conferences:
Conferences would have been yesterday and today, maybe you got an email 'reminder' like I did from PowerSchool.  Now is the time, when we want you to reflect and celebrate the great learning you have been doing these past few months of grade four!  There's lots to celebrate! I have some questions to help guid your thinking and reflections on your learning this year so far (families can do their with students):
  1. What have you learned this year at school that you think is most interesting (and why)?
  2. What new skill or strategy are you most proud of?  Explain this.
  3. What is something you found challenging and how did you persevere?
  4. Talk about a time where you found something really hard, but you didn't give up!
  5. What have you discovered this year about how you learn best?
If you want to make a Google Slide or a little video or a drawing or mind map or ?? about this reflection, please take a photo and email (kaross@cbe.ab.ca) it to me or share it on Google Docs (kaross@educbe.ca)!

Math - If you finished your AREA calculations for your room and the quilt problem, let's think about big numbers!

Can you solve this ZOO TRIP problem?

After solving this problem, take a picture of your work and email it to Mrs. Ross at kaross@cbe.ab.ca

Here is a book to get you thinking about our next focus in Math!  The Great Divide: A Mathematical Marathon by Gayle Ann Dodds....

Reading:  Great job class, on EPIC books we got a CLASS REWARD!  Together we have read 25 books!  Let's see if we can read 50 books by the end of March??

Trout Blog
Copperfield School now has a TROUT blog!  The tank is still in the Learning Commons....keep track of their journey by visiting their new blog! CLICK HERE FOR TROUT BLOG

Science: Take a stroll in nature and use your senses to really observe!
Here is what I saw yesterday at my house around 4pm.  I just had to take the time to listen and look up!  They are birds, either Waxwings or Starlings, I think.  They made a loud humming noise and then a woosh when they all turned together!  Using your estimation skills how many birds do you think are in this flock? (The beeping is my car door, try to ignore that).

Literacy and Math Night was a SUCCESS!
Also, there are some fun things to learn by using resources from our FAMILY MATH AND LITERACY NIGHT that was held way back in February!  They are on the school website and can be accessed here by CLICKING HERE FOR MATH/LITERACY INFORMATION!

Have a HEALTHY AND MEMORABLE SPRING BREAK WITH YOUR LOVED ONES!

Some houses are posting SILLY FACES!
You should go for a walk and try to count how many you see (keep social distancing though)!

Happy First Day of SPRING!

Happy News:
I was so happy to talk to some of you on the phone today or to see your family member at the school picking up your shoes these last two days!  Thank you for connecting with us - at a distance of course!  Through these brief moments I have learned that many of your are still figuring out AREA, working on a cardboard arcade game, finishing up your story on Book Creator, and reading your novel for your book review!  I AM SO PROUD OF YOU ALL!  I am happy to know you can keep on learning in so many simple and creative ways!

Math:
This is the problem I want you to try to solve!  You could even design your own quilt and colour the pattern and figure out the area of a section!  Can you do it?  Take a photo and email your strategy and answer!

Reading - keep reading that novel you were working on (if not, choose a new book on EPIC).  Remember this is due on March 31st - I have posted in Google Docs (Shared With Me) your March Book Review Template that you can use!  Some classmates have already begun!  Try your best.

Writing - Many of you took home your TWAS on the weekend, you can keep a DIARY going of each day.  Try recording some things you learned or are grateful for too!  You will be amazed at what you will notice.

Science -
Simple Machines: use some of your household recycling to make a cardboard arcade game and take a photo or video and email me!  I would love to share it on our blog (if your family is okay with that)!

Plants:  do you have a houseplant?  See if you can take over the responsibility for it/them!  Track your watering, growth (measure it), etc.  When you go outside, look for changes in the plants are they getting buds yet?  How do plants show it is Spring and time for new growth?

I will post more soon!  For now, I think you will be busy.  :)

Just for Fun!  This made me smile.  I hope it makes you show your PEARLY WHITES! He is the Author/Illustrator of Elephant and Piggy Books!

Spring Break would have started now, so we are all on official Spring Break as of Friday!  I will check emails regularly Friday March 20th and after Spring Break, so keep the photos of you learning, discovering, getting fresh air coming!  I will email back when I see your email!

Check my previous blogs to see the log-ins for EPIC, MATHLETICS, RAZ KIDS and hopefully you remember your login to Google Docs.  If not, please email me!  Click here to email: kaross@cbe.ab.ca

It is Wednesday and the LAST DAY OF WINTER! Yipeee!

CELEBRATE THE LAST DAY OF WINTER!

It is Mrs. Ross and I am writing to you from an empty classroom.  It seems so strange without you (for now).  But, I know you are amazing, fabulous students and you will be awesome for your families during this unique situation!

Please check the BLOG POST from Monday and communication from CBE as they sent some information about learning.

Some of your parents/gaurdians will come to the school today and tomorrow during scheduled times to pick up your belongings.  Adults won't be able to stay long, just long enough to get your shoes, earphones, etc.  Included will also be your Raz Kids and Mathletics logins.  Just a reminder EPIC books is available during school hours: pnk1459.  You can email me, if you can't remember your log-ins.

Just to make you smile.....I have been going for walks with my new puppy, Rosie, each day to get fresh air.  Here's a picture of her to make you smile!

I miss you all!  But guess what?! I found a new student to teach...Albert since you are not here!

A Day in the Life of Albert and Mrs. Ross:

Hey...I get any seat in the class!

Albert and I just playing some dice Math games (you can do this at home too)!

Just taking care of the plants!  Who's job was this?

In case you want to write an EPIC ADVENTURE, you want to START your BOOK using one of these strategies!

Such an amazing book, thanks GC. I will keep it for you.

Albert and I are looking at the area work still up around the class.  Thanks for learning about AREA!

I wish you a healthy and happy upcoming Spring Break!  I will be checking email and Google Docs regularly!

Hello FABULOUS FOURS and FAMILIES!

Hi guys! EPIC BOOKS: Pnk1459

I am at school and hoping you are still smiling.  Thanks for listening to the news and staying at home for now.  Until we know more, here are some things you can do to keep learning:

-read a real book (you were told to take your novels home with you on Friday) to give your eyes a rest from screens
-play a board game
-if you are healthy get outside and enjoy some fresh air with your family or at a safe distance
-play math card games (unicorn, you can print off a grid paper and play ARRAY CAPTURE)

-EPIC BOOKS during the day CLICK HERE FOR LINK TO PUT IN CODE: pnk1459 (free during school hours)
-RAZ KIDS. CLICK HERE FOR OUR CLASS!
-MAthletics

In class we were already working on area and book reviews, so you might as well finish those!

Language Arts - Book Review:

Read the novel you told me you were reading.

Then afterwards, you can go on to Google Drive.  I have shared a task with you to complete.  Be sure to SHARE back with me, after you try your best to write full sentences, check for CAPITALS (beginnings of names, places, things and sentences), PUNCTUATION to end a complete sentence.  Remember apostrophes ('s) are not for MORE THAN ONE, but to shorten a word or to show ownership.  HERE IS THE LINK. Use your GOOGLE MAIL login to see it in SHARED WITH ME!

Math: AREA -
Length x width = Area (remember to try to multiply to figure out the area)

Can you 'map' out your room and figure out the area (using steps) for your room, bed, dresser, closet and any other bigger furniture?  You can just use a piece of blank or lined paper.  If you want, it could be your DREAM ROOM!  You could draw up a bird's eye view of your room.  Here is an example:

Science:
Read some SIMPLE MACHINE books on EPIC BOOKS to learn more!  There are lots.  Then with supervision, make a simple CARDBOARD ARCADE game that includes at least 2 simple machines.  We were going to have a building challenge this week of using a paper towel tube (wrapping paper tube), string, and a drink container filled with water to make a PULLEY!  Can you do it?  If so, take a photo and email it to me!  Have fun learning and creating.

To make you smile, here are some pictures of my new puppy we picked up from a little town called Rosemary (2 hours east of Calgary)!  Can you guess her name?

Take care everyone!
I will be in touch with you once we know more!

Hello my friends....
