Scientists in School - Wheels in Motion

Science:
Today we learned a bit more about SIMPLE MACHINES and MECHANICAL ADVANTAGE (effort, force and load to make things easier)! Students, please share some simple machines that make our everyday lives easier!  Scientist Jill used a 'dolly' to move her four heavy boxes instead of making 4 difficult trips to the next class.  Can you explain the simple machine?

Thanks to our AMAZING volunteers that made this learning an exceptional experience! Thanks Darlene, Andrea, Jenn, Brianne, Brandy, Tamara - you all ROCK and were our very own 'simple machines' (okay, you are complex in reality)!

Pink Shirt Day coming soon!

Pink Shirt Day: February 26th!

The Grade 3 Students are going to be hosting the Pink Shirt Day Assembly! You are invited to join us on February 26th at 2:00 pm in the gym. We will be singing songs, reciting poetry and celebrating kindness!

We hope to see you there and remember to wear your PINK Shirt that day!

NOTICE TO DRESS FOR THE WEATHER! On Friday, February 21 our class plans on walking to Copper Pond (just down the street past the red park).  We will be looking at the land through the lens of a scientist, as part of social studies and get some exercise in the fresh February air! Please be prepared with hats, mittens, warm coats, snow pants and boots.  If the weather is cold we will be prepared, if the weather is warm we can remove layers.  Thanks for being prepared!

Welcome back!

Although it was a BLUE DAY this morning, everyone bundled up and went outside for some fresh air at lunch.  A reminder to please come prepared to go outside, with mitts, hat and a warm jacket.  There were a lot of freezing kiddos at lunch today!

Jump Rope for Heart is in full swing!  Check previous blog posts for details how to sign up!

Phys. Ed.:
We are becoming better skippers in the gym, despite the snow and ice outside.  Today, students used long ropes and were in groups of 3-4.  We all tried to skip to the Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear rhyme!  Perhaps some family members could share their past skipping favourites to us, as it turns out we know very few skipping rhymes!  Students turning the rope did a good job and we are now working on cooperation, clear communication, timing and perseverance when our shoulders/arms get sore!  We will focus on long ropes for most of this week.

Teddy Bear Skipping Rhyme

Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, turn around, [skipper turns around]
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, touch the ground, [skipper squats to touch ground while skipping]
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, show your shoe, [skipper lifts one foot to show shoe]
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, that will do!

Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, go upstairs, [skipper pretends to climb stairs]
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, brush your hair, [skipper touches head]
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, turn out the lights, [skipper closes eyes]
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear,, say good-night! [skipper jumps out of rope to sidelines]
